Crayola Crayon Town is one of the most popular picks for Christmas or holiday gifts this year!

When I was a child I absolutely adored “coloring-in”. That was my family’s word for it. I had coloring books, often with fairy-tale characters, and boxes of colored pencils and crayons. The crayons were my favourite because they made a waxy kind of color that had an attractive sheen to it.

I love to see that “coloring-in” is just as popular now with modern children. There is so much that is spoon-fed to kids nowadays – television and computers, while wonderful, often promote passivity instead of active creation. However activities like coloring allow children to learn to make patterns, draw and learn about how to create their own stories. And of course it is a wonderful family activity.

There are so many tools available for coloring these days. Felt markers are very popular, but let me tell you something about them. They are not very good for coloring! A felt marker, however brightly colored, does not allow for shading. Nor does it allow for different stoke techniques. You can create a wide or narrow line, but there is no difference in the color if you press heavily or lightly. It is much better to provide your kids or grandkids with crayons, pencils or pastels, so they can do more things and be more creative.

Coloring has progressed way beyond the outline books that are still popular. The most famous crayon producer of all, Crayola, has many projects available to children to create and color. This adds a dimension to coloring – not only is it filling in the outlines, but it teaches construction, dexterity and encourages creativity. Children can assemble their project and then make up stories about them.

One of the best such projects is called Crayon Town. It is a three-dimensional game in which children can assemble what are effectively stage sets, on which they can then place objects.

There are five different versions of Crayon Town and each one has its own set of crayons and its own special features. The playsets provide storage for crayons too. You can even use up old bits of crayon as part of the construction!

The playsets come in two sizes – small and large. It might be a good idea to start with a small playset and as the child gets used to the concept the large playset will become more appropriate.

The playsets come with the special colored crayons needed for the particular playset. However it might be a good idea to buy an extra box of crayons in basic colors to give a bit more variety. Of course, if the child already has crayons that will probably not be necessary.

The five different versions of Crayon Town are:

As you can see, the Crayon Town sets are ideal for children aged about 4 years to about 10 years. There are some small loose parts, so it is not really suitable to very young children, unless they are closely supervised.

Watch this video that tells more about the Crayon Town playsets:

Crayon Town is excellent for kids.  They get to color, make up the buildings etc, set out the various pieces, use old or broken crayons to enhance the pieces (making the neck for a giraffe, for example).  They can then make up stories about the scenes and move the pieces around according to the action they invent.

This is a superb inexpensive Christmas gift for grandparents to give.  It is educational, safe, will yield hours of entertainment and can involve the whole family. Best of all it keeps the kids away from the television!

These are great. My grand-daughters love it. This is all about Crayons – truly the currency of any kid’s kingdom. The toy includes Crayola (the best) crayons for coloring, as cargo for trucks and planes, and as simple building units for animal bodies, street signs, trees, etc. The set comes with lots of pre-cut artwork panels that can be colored and then easily folded into buildings, archways, etc. Very cool. Later the kids (or mom) can download additional colorable artwork from the Wild Planet website – for free. Airplanes store crayons in their fuselage, trucks carry crayons in their cargo areas. Crayons and those pesky little pieces of crayons (all 2 million of them ,per kid) finally have their day in the sun. Now they have a place to live, work, color, build, be transported. These are very well made. All the provided plastic parts are durable. Even the friction fit of the crayons into plastic parts has a perfect feel for a young kid. The people and the animals are darling. Apparently some awards have already been won by this system. Figures.
